Everyone who owns a property in Spain must have an NIE number. This number identifies you to the tax authorities and is quoted whenever taxes are paid to the exchequer:
Changes in the law over the past year mean that we can no longer apply for this number on your behalf without formal authorisation. The easiest way for us to do this for clients purchasing in the Murcia region is to have the authorisation entered on your escritura (title deeds) so that once these have been signed we can then process the necessary paperwork and make the application. However in certain circumstances you may need the NIE number before you sign the title deeds usually because you are living here prior to the signing and want to buy a car or you are having a Spanish mortgage for your property purchase. Also in the Mazarron area some builders insist you have this number before you sign the title deeds. If any of these circumstances apply to you then you will have to make the application yourself in person. To make the process as simple as possible please phone our office for an appointment. We will prepare the paperwork for you and give you clear directions to Cartagena police station. Once there the process will only take a few minutes and if you return a copy of the application to us we can collect the number for you after a period of approximately three weeks. The only other way is to give us Power of Attorney (either in Spain or from England) and a notarised copy of your passport and we can then apply on your behalf.
If you are purchasing property in the Alicante region there is no alternative but to apply in person as we cannot do this for you even with authorisation. We will arrange to meet you at an agreed point as close as possible to the date of the signing of the deeds (usually the same day or day after). If you need the number prior to the signing we will need advance notice to arrange this. However you will receive your number immediately.

At the time of writing (July 2004) this is the procedure but please bear in mind that it could change at any time!

Please note that you must have your passport with you for the whole application process. Applications in the Alicante region must include four passport photos for each person.
